Masters of the Madasseri Tradition

Among the distinguished figures associated with Madasseri Kalari was Innikelu Ashaan, remembered as one of the great Kalari masters of the family tradition. His expertise and dedication contributed to the preservation of Kalaripayattu within the household and its surrounding community.

Appunni Panicker was another prominent figure in the lineage. He was renowned as a traditional astrologer and was also a poet. His intellectual and literary interests reflected the broader scholarly character of the Madasseri tradition, where astrology, literature, spirituality, and martial knowledge existed alongside one another.

Kandaru Panicker, regarded as the last of the family's traditional masters in the fields of Ayurveda, Marma Chikitsa, and Kalaripayattu, carried forward an important part of this ancestral knowledge. His life represents a period when these disciplines were still closely connected within the traditional household system of Kerala.

The Era of Suppression

The Madasseri family continued the practice and teaching of Kalaripayattu until the period when British colonial rule imposed restrictions on traditional martial practices in Kerala. Following this historical disruption, the family gradually discontinued formal Kalari training.

Although the martial tradition became dormant, the family's commitment to traditional astrology continued. Over the following generations, astrology remained an important field of study and professional practice within the family.

As time passed, the physical Kalari itself was eventually lost. Changes within the family and a gradual decline in interest among some members contributed to the destruction of the original Kalari structure. For nearly two generations, the martial aspect of the family's heritage remained largely dormant.

The Revival of Madasseri Kalari

A significant turning point came when Rajan Panicker, the father of Sreevalsan, took steps to renew the family's Kalari space and revive its traditional presence.

Inspired by the ancestral connection to Kalaripayattu, Sreevalsan later made a personal decision to study the martial art and reconnect with the heritage of his forefathers. His training is guiding by Vipindas Gurukkal of Athma Kalari, whose guidance and instruction played an important role in helping him rediscover and carry forward this ancestral tradition.

For Sreevalsan, learning Kalaripayattu is not a simply the pursuit of a martial art. It is a conscious effort to reconnect with a heritage that had remained dormant within the family for generations.

Preserving a Heritage for the Future

Today, Sreevalsan continues two important dimensions of the Madasseri legacy. Professionally, he follows the family's traditional path of astrology; passionately, he continues the practice of Kalaripayattu.

His vision is to restore the cultural identity and traditional values associated with Madasseri Kalari and to ensure that the knowledge, discipline, and spirit inherited from his ancestors are not lost to time.

The revival of Madasseri Kalari is therefore not merely the restoration of a physical space. It is the continuation of a living family heritage—a heritage shaped by astrology, martial arts, Ayurveda, Marma tradition, spirituality, scholarship, and devotion.

From the knowledge of the ancestors to the responsibility of the present generation, Madasseri Kalari stands as a continuing journey of preservation, revival, and transmission of Kerala's traditional heritage to future generations.

His journey in Kalaripayattu began under the guidance of his grandfather, who gave him his first lessons in the traditional art. He later continued his training under eight different Gurus, gaining knowledge and experience in various aspects of Kalaripayattu. His studies also extended to Kalari Marma Chikitsa, the traditional system of knowledge associated with vital points, physical well-being, and therapeutic practices within the Kalari tradition.

Drawing upon years of dedicated training, experience, and learning under different masters, Vipin Das Gurukkal established Athma Kalari Village with a clear purpose: to preserve the depth of the ancient Kalaripayattu heritage while making its knowledge and discipline accessible to future generations.

Over the years, Athma Kalari Village has welcomed students from different parts of India and from around the world. Many Kalaripayattu enthusiasts have travelled to the institution to learn and experience this traditional martial art. The Kalari continues to attract students who seek authentic training, discipline, physical development, and a deeper understanding of Kerala's martial heritage.

Vipin Das Gurukkal is also known for his expertise in Kalari Marma Chikitsa. His knowledge and experience have brought him opportunities to contribute to film productions, where Indian filmmakers and actors have sought his guidance and expertise in presenting Kalaripayattu and related traditional practices on screen.

His experience has also extended to providing Kalaripayattu training to Indian Army regiments, further reflecting the practical discipline and physical training associated with the traditional martial art.

Today, Athma Kalari Village stands as a place where tradition, discipline, knowledge, and cultural heritage come together. Under the guidance of Vipin Das Gurukkal, the institution continues its endeavour to preserve the legacy of Kalaripayattu and introduce its timeless values to students from India and across the world.
